ABOUT SOMBRERO TIME
Sombrero Time was founded in 2008 by Ruth and David Finsthwait, holding the first classes in their garage with their own children, along with their friends and the neighborhood kids–all from a desire to teach the life-changing difference learning a second language makes. As a thought leader, Ruth speaks at conferences and workshops, sharing her philosophy and practical lessons for second language acquisition. Both Dave and Ruth are passionate to serve their staff and the parents and children of the Sombrero Time community.
WHY THE SOMBRERO?
It started with a story and became a core value. When Sombrero Time was getting off the ground our co-founder Ruth, being a teacher, knew that she would need a cue to help her students prepare for learning Spanish. So, she would put a Mexican Sombrero on her head to signal, “now it’s time class to put our Spanish thinking caps on”. And thus, the name “SombreroTime” was born.
Over the development of our company and culture, the sombrero has come to signify our deep values of hard work and celebration that we instill in our students and our team. Everyone at our company loves and appreciates cultural differences. We all seek to create cultural tolerance and understanding. The idea that when you speak a foreign language you then begin to understand a person, group, or culture on a deeper level, rings true at Sombrero Time.
Thus, hard work that goes into anything we achieve, like learning a new language, and the appropriate celebration of that achievement is well represented by the sombrero.
