Professional development (PD) is a critical component of a teachers growth plan. In order to effectively deliver any curriculum the instructor must be thoroughly trained and equipped. Sombrero Time instructors are required take 25 hours of PD per year as part of our instructor development plan. Now available to instructors everywhere, the Sombrero Time PD program can help your staff grow in leaps and bounds in all aspects of teaching.
Sombrero Time PD will equip you with a proven and effective curriculum that develops all four of the language areas: reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension. We will also train you in how to deliver the Sombrero Time curriculum in an immersive environment, where you teach the language in the language.
Sombrero Time Professional Development offers our proven three prong approach to training: Kick-Off training, Innovation Sessions, Ongoing Coaching & Support.
Professional Development Outline
Kick-off Training:
Kickoff training consists of a 3 day engagement focused on becoming well versed in the curriculum structure, class room launch strategy, teaching objectives, and exposure to the immersion methodology used by Sombrero Time. Additional topics covered will include developing a plan for classroom set-up, behavioral management with language learners and material management.
Innovation Sessions:
If teachers are going to remain fresh they must keep learning. Innovation session represent ongoing development over the instructional year. At Sombrero Time, we take learning very seriously. Each month we provide a topic, often with guest speakers, relevant to language learning, classroom strategies, reflective pieces on teaching and learning, collaborative problem solving and more. These staff meetings include 1 hour of training and 1 hour of collaborative problem solving. Staff meetings are held 7 times over the course of the year in person or via Internet for our distance learning partners.
Ongoing Coaching & Support:
One of the greatest assets to Sombrero Time PD is coaching right where the instruction is happening. One of our Master Teachers will observe at each coaching session, develop a review specific to how the instructor is delivering the curriculum and connecting with his/her students effectively. Our distance partners are supported via Internet technologies and personal phone support. All partners have access to weekly curriculum reviews and community support.
Pricing Structure
Pricing is based on group training of up to 15 instructors. Pricing for individuals and small groups is available upon request.
Kick-off Training:
3 days of 6 hour training sessions

September, October, November, January, February, March & April

Cost – $2,500
Innovation Sessions includes attendance to the live staff meetings and collaborative sharing and problem solving. For our off-site partners we can offer web conference training with follow-up discussion and problem solving.
Ongoing Coaching & Support:
On-site coaching or video tape analysis and discussion. Live web streaming also available. Extended session available upon request.
